Jul 29, 2012. I recently upgraded my Mac Mini Mid 2011 from Lion to Mountain Lion. it is not caused by the initial update process, but still is booting slower!

MacBook won't boot. Also won't boot in. If you did mean command-S, that's not safe boot. That's single user. If it is a 15" screen, then it's a MacBook Pro.. Yep, there's a progress bar for safe boot since Lion. DeltaMac is.
Now, with Lion and ML I've noticed it's pretty slow to boot up, taking over a minute .. enabled, 'cos I hate that feature and it even slows down my Mac at shutdown/ restart.. Did you do a clean install of ML or just upgrade? If your delay is not at that point but after the logo shows up then it is hanging on.
